Staying Connected This Summer

May 18, 2022 | by ANDREW MORENO | FLA Campus Pastor

Summer is finally here! For some of you this day couldn't have arrived any sooner. Some of you were ready for summer when the school year began!!

Summer vacation is a good thing. We need breaks from things. However, the only problem is if we also take a break from God during the summer. Think about it. During the school you have worships in your classes, chapels, UNIFY. That's just what happens during school. You have church, youth programs, family worship etc.

And now the summer is here, and we have a break….and that break includes a break from the consistent spiritual activities of school, something that could have negative impact on our own personal spirituality and relationship with God. Before I go into some ideas on how to stay connected, I wanted to address how important it is to have a personal relationship with Christ outside what you are exposed to at school, church, and home. The goal is to be self-conscious and responsible in growing your personal relationship with Christ.

Here are a few tips to stay connected over the summer and beyond.
  1. Have a goal in mind. What specific area would you like to grow in or learn about? Is it a prayer life, a Bible study? Identify, think, pray and focus on that goal.
  2. Find resources/materials, books, or apps. You can always start with the Bible; I am sure you have one of those somewhere :). Another great resource is the YouVersion Bible app. Most have it, but not all use it. It has hundreds of devotionals and Bible studies right in the palm of your hand.
  3.
  4. Stay connected with those friends that help feed your spiritual soul. You know who they are. Maybe a group of you can meet up for an hour or two and talk about a devotional you might be doing together in the YouVersion app. You can create a group study through the app and study together. It doesn't even have to be the app, it can just simply be a call over the phone and a prayer.
  5. Serve. Summer is the perfect time to find an organization or church outreach project. Serving is an active form of worship to God. While you are serving/volunteering you'll learn things you may have never learned otherwise. Experience and hear the Holy Spirit speaking in your life like never before.
Always remember that Satan does not want you to have a growing relationship in Christ. This is what he fears the most. Because as we grow in our relationship in Christ it will reveal his love for us. Keeping Him away will keep His love away.

My prayer and blessing for you for the summer is found in Ephesians 3:16-18 "I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is."
