Christopher Huie’s extraordinary journey, from the child of Jamaican immigrants in Florida to becoming the 19th Black astronaut to travel into space, is a testament to his resilience, work ethic, and dedication.
Graduating from Forest Lake Academy (FLA) in 2006, Huie’s diverse and academically rigorous experience at the school set the stage for his historic achievements.
During his time at FLA, Mr. Huie worked as a student worker to support his education, instilling a strong work ethic and the ability to balance responsibilities. “Only successful when I’m super busy,” Mr. Huie reflects, attributing his discipline and success to the challenging yet fulfilling days as a working student. This period became a foundation for his success, both professionally and academically.
One of Mr. Huie’s fondest memories at FLA was being a part of the school’s band. He credits his high school band teacher, Mr. Fred Armstrong, and his bandmates for fostering some of his best teenage memories. As a member of the band for all four years, Mr. Huie played the contrabass clarinet, forging close camaraderie with bandmates who became his closest friends. “I think those are probably some of my best memories because I made many great friends in the band, and we ended up kind of being a friend group,” Mr. Huie recalls.
